Construction and renovation project Sundaridevi School

Plan International has over 70 years experience in planning, implementation and evaluation of projects. They have hundreds of projects around the world who need financial support. Each year we decide which projects we want and we are able to support financially. This of course is essentially dependent on how many donations we are equipped with.

In the spring of 2011, we have decided in addition to the child sponsorships and the existing Kamalari project to support financially a building and renovation project at the Sundaridevi school in the village composite Agra with a 4-digit amount. This school in the district Makwanpur is the only school in the village association, which maintains a secondary school. Here currently 370 girls and 351 boys are learning in grades 1 to 10 and in preschool. The school building and the dormitory will be completed by the end of February 2012 as far as possible. Starting in the summer 2012, the new facilities can be used by the students.

The existing classrooms are very small, dark and in need of renovation. During the rainy season there is always water damage due to leaking roofs. It also lacks of enough toilets and clean water as well as school furniture and teaching and learning materials. Many students and teaching staff come from far away. Everyday they have to walk for one to three hours to school.

The following activities are planned:

• Construction of a new school building with 10 large classrooms

• Conversion of the old school building into a dormitory, in which then a accommodation for 42 students and six teachers is

available. A room will be expanded as a kitchen, in which the over-night staying children's can prepare their meals.

• Expanding the supply of running water and construction of toilets

• Construction of a playground and features with various sports equipment for outdoors (eg. footballs, volleyballs, basketballs,

  badminton and jump ropes)

• Building a wall to protect the school grounds

• Amenities with school furniture, books and computers as well as various board games (eg. puzzles and chess)

• Run workshops on hygiene and health, first aid, school management, and on children's rights, training of teachers in using

  computers

Examples of cost components with a brief description

Writing desk and related school bench: 46,66 USD

Sanitation Awareness Activity: 1 event 167 USD

It takes some time to internalize the principle of the day by day toilet-usage. In the project plan the training is scheduled before the construction of the toilets. It will make the girls and boys realize how important it is to use a toilet, and points for example, to the pollution of the environment, if this does not happen.

1 Set Playmaterials: 330 USD

The school buys play materials and equipment for indoor and outdoor use: a carom board (a game that can be played by two or four children), puzzles, chess and other board games, as well as basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, jump ropes and badminton.

Plant seedlings: 537 USD

The children are involved from the beginning in the planning and implementation of the project. They also take responsibility at the planting and care of the plants. Each planted tree will bear the name tag of a child who takes care of the tree.
